Posted August 6, 2010

Lothian and Borders police have confirmed that the deaths of 3 children, all under the age of 12, at an incident in Slateford Road in Edinburgh are being treated as suspicious.

The 3 children, two boys and a girl were found dead in a three story town house as emergency services responded to an initial report of a gas explosion at an address in Slateford Road.

An adult woman was found lying injured on the ground outside the property. The woman was taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary where her injuries are being treated.

Police say that the children's identity's will not be revealed until after the post mortems have been carried out.

Emergency services responded to a call at 1500 hours and initially thought they were dealing with a gas explosion but the gas services isolated the gas supply and it was established that there was no problem with the gas supply.

Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service did extinguish a small fire in the first floor of the house.

A spokesperson for Lothian and Borders police said, "A criminal investigation is currently underway and nothing more can be said at this time into the circumstances which led to their deaths."
