Police ask for patience in Joanna Yeates murder investigation

Posted March 9, 2011

Bristol - The officers investigating the murder of Joanna Yeates have made an appeal to the public for patience as they continue to piece together the circumstances surrounding her death.

Joanna Yeates was found dead on Christmas Day and since then Avon and Somerset Constabulary have undergone a massive forensic investigation and have appealed successfully for people to come forward using a variety of methods including social networking site Facebook.

As forensic examinations continue in the flat in Canynge Road that Jo shared with her boyfriend Greg Reardon, police today searched the drains close to the flat, which police said was a routine part of the investigation, and the Clifton College rifle range which is at the back of the flat.

Chief Superintendent Jon Stratford said, according to BBC News, "It will take time and we ask people to be patient. But rest assured we'll find the person who killed Jo.

"This is a large investigation. We've got well over 70 officers and police staff dedicated to it.

"There's lots and lots of lines of inquiry, lots of leads which all need to be followed.

"The investigation team are meticulously following every single one."

Investigating officers are still not clear on how or where Jo Yeates died but yesterday they were able to reveal that when Jo was found on Christmas Day she was not wearing a jacket and she was wearing only one sock.

The sock has taken on significance for the police who have appealed for anyone with information on the sock, which, as pictured, is a long ski sock, to come forward.

Detective Chief Inspector Phil Jones said in press conference, "When Jo was found at the site in Longwood Lane her coat and boots were missing. These were later found at her flat in Canynge Road.
"One of her socks was missing and we have yet to find this. It is described as a light grey sock with lighter detail on the toes, heel and shin.
"We have not located this sock at the scene or at Jo's home. I am keen to find it, so I would appeal to anyone who may know where it is to contact my team. You can do this on 0845 456 7000 or via www.avonandsomerset.police.uk/jo/ "
The charity CrimeStoppers, who last week but up a £10,000 reward for information leading to a conviction, said today that they were able to hand over to the police "valuable information" .
