Protesters threatened by man with live hand grenade in Warsaw

Police in Warsaw say that they have arrested a man who was found to be carrying a live hand grenade outside the Polish Presidential Palace today where protesters were gathering to object to a plaque commemorating the Smolensk victims.

According to police it was at first believed that the 60-year old man was only carrying an object which "resembled a grenade". Further examination of the of the object that it was in fact a real hand grenade.

The man, who remains unnamed for the moment, was seen to be threatening protesters who were standing opposite the front of the Polish Presidential Palace. He was waving a disarmed F1 defensive hand grenade at them.

The incident is the second to involve the Smolensk plaque in just two days as yesterday a 71-year old man, named only as Eugeniusz P, was arrested after he was discovered smearing excrement over the plaque which commemorates the 96 who died in the April 10 plane crash in Smolensk, Russia.

Eugeniusz P, who lives near the city of Lublin in eastern Poland, is currently undergoing psychiatric examination but has been charged with defamation of a national monument and could face up to five years in prison.
